What is the difference between resolution and accuracy?
Resolution is the minimum displacement that the linear encoder (glass scale) can detect and report. A 5 µm resolution means that the linear encoder registers every 0.005 mm displacement.
Accuracy refers to the difference between the actual traveled distance and the measured traveled distance. Due to various factors, there will always be a (small) deviation. This occurs with all linear encoders, including Newall, Fagor, Mitutoyo, Sony, or Heidenhain scales. The smaller the deviation, the better the accuracy. All scales are calibrated at the factory before shipment. Additionally, you can also compensate for deviations in the digital readout, known as linear error compensation.
